More about Scio

Scio began operations in 1996. It is a private organisation, independent of government influence or subsidies. Scio’s goal is to provide services that schools need but which are not often readily available. Since 1996 the company has administered and carried out hundreds of thousands of exams, and numerous surveys and projects.

In 2009/2010, for example, we collaborated on admission exams with hundreds of secondary schools and more than 50 faculties of Czech universities. 60,000 applicants sat for these exams. Most schools paid for the services from their respective budgets.

The SCIO team consists of an ever growing group of highly committed and enthusiastic individuals with backgrounds in education, mathematics, statistics and other disciplines. Most team members are based at the Scio office in Prague.

Scio strongly promotes and supports internet communication, which has been successfully used for collecting examination results as well as for analyzing the results online.

Founder

The Company is chaired by its founder Dr Ondřej Šteffl

Ondřej has been involved in education since 1976. He graduated from mathematics at the Charles University in Prague and later received his PhD in sociology at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. After, he worked at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences and taught maths and physics at various secondary schools (students of 15-19 years of age) for many years. In 1990, Ondřej founded PORG - general secondary school in Prague - the first private school established in the Czech Republic after the fall of comunism in 1989. The school has proven to be one of the premiere secondary schools in the Czech Republic. (www.porg.cz)

Ondřej served as PORG´s principal for five years, and in 1995, he founded Scio and has been its spiritus movens ever since. Ondřej has played an active role in reforming Czech educational system and in promoting the use of computers in education. He has published various studies and articles on evaluation, assessment, eLearning and education in general. He speaks English and Russian.

Quality

Scio is one of perhaps only a few companies of its kind to have introduced the quality-management system (ISO 9001:2008) for testing, including development of tests and other evaluation tools, data processing, evaluation and analysis of test results.

Confidentiality

Scio is registered with the Czech Office for Protection of Personal Data; results are provided exclusively to the relevant school; communication via the internet is conducted in secure mode. In other words, we never make your results public.
