International Test of English as a Foreign Language

-
How effective is foreign-language instruction at schools? In terms of their knowledge of English, where do our children stand in comparison with the top students from other countries and in comparison with the European average? These are some of the questions that led to the creation of the Scio International Test of English as a Foreign Language
-
This involves a pilot project of testing 14-year-old students’ knowledge of English in various countries.
-
In May 2008 hundreds of schools participated in the ITEFL project. The project featured the participation of more than 17,000 students from Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, and Spain.
Format
The test is designed to be taken within 45 minutes and contains test items corresponding to the A2-B1 level according to the European reference framework. Without paying any fees, each school will then be able to enter the testing results into a special internet application which will immediately display the results of the testing, including a graphic illustration of the relative position of your school, class, region and country.
Course of the project
Following registration, schools received from us a parcel containing the tests, a CD for listening comprehension and instructions. Teachers distributed the test to students and collected them after they had been completed. Schools then entered the test results into a special internet application, Sciodat.
Detailed comparison

-
After entering the results into the Sciodat application, schools receive comparisons at the following levels: country (e.g. France), region (e.g. Bavaria), school (your school), class (individual tested classes within your school).
-
Each school will see only its own result in comparison with other schools, but it will not know how any other specific school performed. Confidentiality is a top concern for us!
Use of results
For schools, information from the project serves primarily as feedback on the quality of English instruction. The information also serves for illustrating the extent of English-language knowledge at the international level and will be submitted to the competent bodies of the EU and the countries whose schools participated in the project.
- School reports are now available to download from the Sciodat application free of charge. Remember to click on the green button „Create school report“ first.
